La vida y hechos de Estebanillo González constitutes the last link in the evolution of the picaresque genre in the XVIIth century, situated between the authentic autobiography and the fictitious one. The real existence of the protagonist, reference to the official facts and true geographical details are juxtaposed in the novel with certain picaresque topics. The aim of the present article is to analyze the episodes relative to the two journeys of Estebanillo to Poland in the light of the diplomatic reports and historical documents of the epoch in order to verify the credibility of the narrated events. We will focus on analyzing not only the protagonists itinerary, comparing it with the real one of the imperial courier and the route of the Polish royal entourage, that Estebanillo claims to have accompanied, but also his comments on the Polish customs and habits such as the relations of the monarch with his subjects, the etiquette and fashion at the court of Warsaw, the command of foreign languages, the royal entertainment, banquets and gifts, the Polish typical hairstyle and clothing and the student life in Cracow. We will also emphasize the omissions and inaccuracies, that abounds in the story and prevent us to confirm with certainty the picaro’s stay in Poland.
