In our article we try to approach the theme of Spanish romanticism, and particularly the romantic vision of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer. Within this we investigate the role of the universal metaphor of romanticism ―the solitary tear― in the Legends of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and observe how the poet creates a romantic world on the verge of reality and imagination. With the solitary tear as a universal metaphor for romanticism, Bécquer seeks unity (which brings his literary vision closer to philosophical thought and existentialism in particular), and on the other, emphasizes the role of the one in the formation of the unit. In addition to the depth of feeling, the metaphor has a summary feature of the narrative, a sign of the end of the romantic scene. Through the solitary tear Bécquer expresses the spiritual condition of the romantic hero.
