Conxita Domènech
This essay examines the viceroy of Catalonia in Don Quixote. Although Cervantes's character Antonio Moreno has been studied previously, and the cuatralbo of the galleys have been identified as Ramon d'Oms i de Calders, the viceroy of Catalonia has been neglected by Cervantes scholars and has not been identified. Therefore, this essay connects the viceroy of Catalonia with Pedro Manrique. It does so not only because the dates coincide (Manrique carried the title of viceroy of Catalonia in 1610, the same year in which Cervantes spent time in Barcelona), but also because the protective actions of Manrique regarding Perot Rocaguinarda and the Catalan Moriscos concur with the benevolent acts of the viceroy described by Cervantes.
