In this article I study the impact of the Treaty of Basel, signed between Spain and France in 1795, on the collective imaginary of the Dominican Spaniards, who suddenly became French citizens. For that purpose, I have analysed a work of the popular poet Manuel Meso Mónica, which reflects the public opinion of the inhabitants of Santo Domingo at that moment and was written soon after the publication of the peace treaty in the colony. The article has three sections: in the introduction I describe the Hispanic-Dominican historical context when the peace of Basel was published in that territory, as well as the theoretical framework of my research; in the second part, after studying Meso Mónica's background and the morphology of his poem, I analyse the latter to show the consequences of the treaty in Santo Domingo, according to the poet's testimony; finally, I sum up my conclusions
En este artículo estudio el impacto de la paz de Basilea, firmada entre España y Francia en 1795, en el imaginario colectivo de los españoles dominicanos, que súbitamente se convirtieron en ciudadanos franceses. Para ello, he analizado una obra del poeta popular Manuel Meso Mónica, representativa de la opinión pública de los habitantes de Santo Domingo en aquel momento, que fue compuesta poco después de la publicación de dicho tratado de paz en la colonia. El artículo consta de tres partes: en la introducción describo el contexto hispano-dominicano cuando se publicó la paz de Basilea, así como el marco teórico de mi investigación; en la segunda parte, tras estudiar la extracción de Meso Mónica y la morfología del poema, desgloso este último para describir las consecuencias de la paz citada en Santo Domingo, según el testimonio del poeta; por último, expongo mis conclusiones.
