El nombre del río alavés Jugalez ha sufrido diversas vicisitudes desde que se documenta en la mitad del siglo XVII. Durante el siglo XIX, por una sucesión de errores aparecidos en diccionarios geográficos y mapas, la denominación se fue alterando hasta llegar a la forma Inglares en las últimas décadas de ese siglo. A finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX el nombre deformado se extendió rápidamente, por vía principalmente administrativa. A pesar de ello, el nombre se ha mantenido vivo, con la variante Jubalez, hasta mediados del siglo XX, en el uso popular del curso bajo del río.
The name of the Jugalez river has undergone a number of alterations since it was first documented in the 17th century. During the 19th century, due to a succession of mistakes in geographical dictionaries and maps, the name gradually transformed and by the last decade of the century it had become Inglares. At the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th, the distorted name quickly spread, mainly via public administration. Even so, in popular usage along the lower course of the river, the name lived on as the variant Jubalez until the middle of the 20th century.
Le nom du cours d’eau alavais Jugalez a subi de nombreuses vicissitudes selon des docu-ments datant du milieu du XVIIe siècle. Au cours du XIXe siècle, suite à une succession d’erreurs sur des dictionnaires géographiques et des cartes, ce nom a été déformé pour deve-nir Inglares au cours des dernières décennies de ce siècle. A la fin du XIXe et au début du XXesiècle, ce nom déformé s’est étendu rapidement, principalement par la voie admnistrative. Malgré cela le nom a continué d’exister dans l’usage populaire pour nommer le niveau infé-rieur de ce cours d’eau jusqu’au milieu du XXe siècle, avec la variante Jubalez.
