This work studies the figure of the dandy as a literary character and a fashionable figure of the 19th century. With English origin, the dandy was an urban prototype who cultivated beauty. But was he a dandy or a fop? If the latter character was an eighteenth-century youth who followed french fashions, who was the dandy? In order to answer these simple questions, we propose to define their identity and their temporary framework to determine if it was an archetype or a social stereotype. Based on an etymological revision, we will try to review these figures and their sociocultural aspects, through their literary and vestimentary image, with the purpose of understanding if the dandy was a fop.
