Despite idyllic pictures of the past as an untouchable place, critical views on the constructed nature of history have shown the importance of the narratives we tell about it. Especially for women in general and lesbians in particular, the retellings of the past are a key space for intervention. In this paper I will be addressing the silences produced by the hegemonic recreation of the past but also the projects that have developed from feminist criticism in that particular realm of theory and practice. In particular, I will be discussing the theoretical background behind the writing of my novel Pirata (Reimóndez 2009) as a practical example of the need for non-heterosexual women to rewrite the past through literature.
