This article centers on the artistic participation of Argentinean actress Libertad Lamarque, otherwise known as "La Dama del Tango" (the Dame of Tango), in the Mexican film industry during the so-called Golden Age (ca. 1935-58). This analysis considers what I call the canonization of Libertad Lamarque and follows two primary axes. First, it examines the elevation of the maternal figure to the divine, and second, it considers Lamarque's inclusion in the Mexican mainstream film canon as a transnational star. Therefore, I examine her entry into Mexico's star system, transcending her role as foreign actress and onscreen mother to her central participation in the creation of female paradigms in the Mexican national imaginary.
