La concepción inmaculada de la Virgen María Madre de Dios fue definida como dogma de fe por el Papa Pío IX el 8 de diciembre de 1954. Casi trescientos años antes, en 1670, la religiosa concepcionista franciscana Sor María de Jesús de Ágreda escribió una historia de la Virgen María titulada «La Mística Ciudad de Dios», en la que argumentaba lo definido posteriormente en el dogma. La obra ha sido traducida a más de veinte idiomas. El precedente inmaculista de la Madre Ágreda será reafirmado también por el Concilio Vaticano II y los actuales estudios de mariología
The immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, was defined as a dogma of faith by Pope Pius IX on december 8, 1954. Almost three hundred years, in 1670, the religious franciscan conceptionist Sister María de Jesús de Ágreda wrote a story of the Virgin Mary entitled «The Mystical City of God», in wich she argued what was defined later in the dogma. The work has been translated into more than twenty languages. The immaculist precedent of Mother Ágreda will also be reaffirmed by the Vatican Council II and the current studies of marilogy.
