Held at Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso, Texas, since 1975, the Siglo de Oro Drama Festival has become the focal point for US theatrical stagings and scholarship on the living genre of comedia performance. Many critics would be surprised to discover that this particular festival is the oldest in the world exclusively dedicated to Hispanic early modern theatre. With an organizational mission to engage in community outreach, the Siglo de Oro Drama Festival has also become a paragon of access to the performing arts and effective intercultural dialogue about hispanismo, or legacies of Spanish American culture, presently straddling the US/Mexican border. This article will probe the cultural politics of (re)staging the comedia in El Paso, and exploring how borderland Anglo and Hispanic communities have become connoisseurs of this dramatic genre staged continuously for over forty years
