Durante el siglo dieciocho, una imagen milagrosa que representa a Nuestra Señora de la Merced viajó por Sudamérica, e incluso España, reuniendo limosnas para los proyectos de construcción de la Orden de la Merced en Quito. Evidencia de la popularidad de la llamada ‘Peregrina de Quito’ es el notable número de pinturas de la imagen, principalmente de Cuzco, que existen hoy en día. A partir de la relativamente escasa documentación textual contemporánea, este ensayo recopila lo que se sabe sobre la devoción a la ‘Peregrina de Quito’ para colocar estas bien conocidas pinturas en su contexto histórico.
During the eighteenth century a miracle-working figure representing Our Lady of Mercy travelled through South America and even Spain gathering alms for the construction projects of the Mercederian order in Quito. Evidence of the popularity of the so-called ‘Pilgrim of Quito’ is the remarkable number of paintings of the image, primarily from Cuzco, extant today. Drawing on the relatively scant contemporary textual documentation, this essay gathers what is known about the devotion to the ‘Peregrina de Quito’ in order to place these well-known paintings in their historical context.
