Este ensayo pretende terciar en la polémica sobre la abolición de las corridas de toros remontándose a uno de sus precursores, el escritor ilustrado Jovellanos, por medio del comentario de las facultades del maestro asturiano a la hora de echar mano de la jerga del toreo para rematar ante la afición, tirándole a la cabeza sus propios trastos de matar, una faena anti-taurina de salón: “Toros” (Memoria para el arreglo de la policía de los espectáculos y diversiones públicas, 1796). Y se citan a tal fin, conformando una terna de maestros, dos primeros espadas del ensayismo español actual y, ambos, ilustrados filósofos vascos: el aficionado taurino Savater y el abolicionista anti-taurino Mosterín. The aim of this essay is terciar in the controversyabout the abolition of bullfighting by going back to one of its forefathers, the enlightened writer Jovellanos and commenting on the facultades of the Asturias born maestro when he made use of the bullfighting jargon to rematar before the afición. To do so, he threw at them their own trastos de matar, an as to unding anti-bullfighting faena de salon: “Bulls”. (Memoria para el arreglo de la policía de los espectáculos y diversiones públicas,1796).
For that purpose, two renowned espadas of the Spanish current essay writing are summoned up: the pro-bullfighting aficionado Savater and the anti-bullfighting abolitionist Mosterín. Both enlightend Basque philosophers who together with Jovellanos set up aterna of maestros.
