El artículo trata sobre cómo Javier Marías aborda el género retrato en Miramientos (1997). El autor describe dos o más fotografías de distintos autores de la tradición hispánica en momentos diferentes de sus vidas, incluido él mismo. Atendiendo a la condición metafórica del lenguaje, utiliza constantes símiles, pasajes ficticios de naturaleza analógica y repara en las vidas posibles que los rostros le sugieren. Además, sitúa a los retratados en el tiempo al comparar sus imágenes sucesivas. El resultado consiste en una percepción ética y conmiserativa de los personajes, en la mejor tradición novelesca, incluido el componente de humor.
This article deals with the way Javier Marías treats the genre of the portrait in Miramientos (1997). The author describes two or more photographs of various Hispanic writers (including himself) at different moments of their lives. Attending to the metaphoric condition of language, he uses constant similes, fictitious passages of an analogical nature, and considers the possible lives that the faces suggest to him. Furthermore, he locates the portrayed writers in time by comparing their successive images. The result consists in an ethical and sympathetic perception of the personalities, in the best novelistic tradition, including an element of humor.
