The aim of this paper is to develop an analysis of Spanish glides from a functional phonological point of view, by examining three topics: the first one is the distinction between vowel and consonant, which reveals a conflict about their place and their phonological nature either as units of the phonological system, or as allophones of other vocalic or consonant units. The second topic is the interrelation between phonology and morphonology, which has influenced different proposals when assigning the glides to the phoneme that they belong to. Finally, the interrelation between phonology and phonetics will be analyzed, in the specific field of consonant strengthening phenomena that authors have pointed out in some phenomena as juncture, rising diphtongs at the beginning of words such as hueco or hierro and syntactic phonetics. These phenomena have led to different phonological interpretations which are incompatible.
