The memory novel that has addressed the remembrance of the Spanish Civil War has mostly focused on the recreation of past events in order to show aspects and stories of that moment that were unknown. Los girasoles ciegos appeared in what has received the name of «memory boom» but has stood out not only for its literary quality but also because it does not only reconstruct specific facts and experiences of victims’ suffering as a result of war but in each of the «derrotas» that integrate the book, Alberto Méndez has introduced different acts of resistance to fascism and to the authoritarian regime through writing or speech. This work specifically analyzes this aspect in two of the stories: «Manuscrito encontrado en el olvido» and «El idioma de los muertos».
In spite of the fact that they are very different from each other, and from the other two tales, all of them share the same purpose: to claim the competence of literature to enable the transmission and preservation of Spanish Civil War’s memory.
