Hasta bien avanzados los años 60 del siglo XX, ha sido más que notorio el sostenido esfuerzo por deslindar lo más rigurosamente posible lo intralingüístico de toda "sustancia contaminante". Los grandes nombres son, sin duda, Saussure y Chomsky; pero podría agregarse una larga lista. Esa gran corriente, que de manera casi absoluta predominó por más de medio siglo, continúa ocupando una "plaza" central (ahora ya como generativismo, las más de las veces), aunque esta le sea cada vez más disputada por otras corrientes, a que también se refiere aquí el autor.
Deep into the 1960's, there was most notoriously a sustained effort to isolate as rigorously as possible an intralinguistic approach from any "contaminating substance". The great names are, undoubtedly, those of Saussure and Chomsky, althought a long list could be added. This vast trend, which almost indisputedly reigned for more than half a century, still occupies a central position among linguists (nowadays usually labelled as generative linguistics), although it finds itself under an intensified siege by other trends, also referred to by the autor in the article.
