We propose the analysis of linguistic and discursive mechanisms used by the two candidates in the last elections in 2014 in Colombia. Our main goal is to highlight the different discursive structures used by the candidates during the debate between the two rounds on June 9, 2014.We will focus on some recurring formulaic structures used by the candidates in order to present and develop their arguments. First of all, we can identify the use of some deictic elements, both of person and time, by each candidate. These elements were used with a particular goal in the speech of each one: the candidate, and pres-ident in term, used, most frequently, the plural form of the first person “nosotros” exclusive (he and his staff) and the perfect time to highlight the achievements in his first term; while the opposition candidate used more frequently the first person pronoun, in its singular form, as well as the present tense, to express his desire to be president, as well as non-retrospective tenses to criti cize his opponent. In addi-tion, each candidate built an argumentative scheme taking into account a discurs-ive strategy focused on the subject of peace. On the one hand, the candidate and president in term Juan Manuel Santos used a semantic field focused on peace and change. On the other hand, the opposition candidate Oscar Ivan Zuluaga used a semantic field focused on the “indeterminate” peace, a peace with conditions. These two strategies include other discursive strategies that we will try to expose in our study, namely, the use of formulaic structures and their counter-parts in order to legitimize the speech of the political speaker and delegitimize the speech of his opponent; the use of some formulaic structures for describing interlocutors and so on and so forth.
