Para llevar a cabo su proyecto imperial de exploración y conquista de América, los españoles reclutaron a una multitud de intérpretes. Dichos intérpretes tenían distintos antecedentes, aunque los dos perfiles más comunes parecen haber sido, por un lado, el de indígena o mestizo y, por otro lado, el de europeo que aprendió el idioma del pueblo conquistado. Un grupo menos conocido, y sobre el cual se ha investigado menos, es el constituido por personas de ascendencia africana. El presente trabajo procura indagar en este último perfil mediante un estudio de caso histórico centrado en la figura de Esteban de Dorantes, un esclavo africano que se convirtió en intérprete. El trabajo se centrará en la función desempeñada por Esteban en calidad de esclavo, intérprete y guía durante la exploración de lo que hoy se conoce como Norteamérica.
When the Spanish launched the exploration and conquest of the Americas, they enlisted a host of interpreters for the task of Empire. These interpreters came from varying backgrounds, but the two most common profiles seem to be that of Indigenous or Mestizo individuals, on the one side, and Europeans who learned the languages of the conquered on the other. A less well—known, less researched group included people of African ancestry. This paper seeks to inquire into the latter type of interpreter by presenting a historical case study of Esteban de Dorantes, an African slave who became an interpreter. The paper will focus on his role as a slave, interpreter, and guide during the exploration of what is now North America.
