Este trabajo ofrece una reflexión sobre el estatus lingüístico y sociolingüístico del náhuatl, lengua con el mayor número de hablantes entre las lenguas indo-mexicanas. Se discuten aquí las cuestiones polémicas acerca de unidad/diversidad de náhuatl, pertinencia de estandarización y alfabetización. En la última parte se analizan efectos de contacto lingüístico y se demuestra que, a pesar de sus 1,5 millones de hablantes, es una lengua en peligro debido al desplazamiento que está viviendo.Palabras clave: náhuatl, estandarización, desplazamiento lingüístico, préstamos, convergencia, alternancia de códigos compuesta.
This paper offers a reflection on the linguistic and sociolinguistic status of Nahuatl, a language with the highest number of speakers among Indo-Mexican languages. Controversial issues about Nahuatl unity/diversity, pertinence of standardization and literacy are discussed here. In the last part, the effects of linguistic contact are analyzed and it is demonstrated that in spite of its 1.5 million speakers, it is a language in danger due to the ongoing displacement.Key words: Nahuatl, standardization, linguistic displacement, loan words, convergence, compound code alternation.
