The only novel written by Juan Eduardo Cirlot (1916-1973), Nebiros, was banned by Franco's censorship in 1951 and remained unpublished until 2016. In this article, I examine the original reworking of elements from Surrealism and Existentialism carried out by Cirlot to configure his defense of poetic imagination and its ontological possibilities. Through the analysis of the aesthetic of evil and visionary symbolism, I establish connections between Cirlot's philosophical sketches and poetry to clarify the ethic of creation that underlies the ensemble of his literary production.
