    Text read in the opening of the IV Galician Translation Syrnposium (Vigo 2000). A discussion is opened about the need for promoting the scien-tific texts translation into Galician language. A linguistic community cannot give up creating and translating scientific texts without damaging its own esteem and its position in the world. Sorne ex peri en ces of the use of the Galician language in communications as well as in scientific works demon-strate that it is not impossible to make science in Galician, in spite ofthe eco-nomic difficulties and of the mental routines of the different human agents in volved.
