O artigo ocúpase en primeiro lugar do proceso de desenvolvemento da denominada "economía-mundo occidental" (unha parte do planeta autónoma e autosuficiente dende o punto de vista económico), facendo especial fincapé nas repercusións que este concepto ten nos sistemas lingüísticos. Céntrase, deste xeito, a relación entre globalización e lingua no marco xeral de expansión do capitalismo. Tócanse a seguir algunhas cuestións referidas á lingua científica na súa triple dimensión de vehículo de coñecemento, de ferramenta semiótica precisa para a producción científica e de escenario das loitas políticas. Préstase especial atención á aparición do inglés como lingua científica en occidente e á súa rápida expanción sustentada en motivos políticos e económicos en detrimento doutras linguas nacionais.
This paper deals, in the first place, with the process of development of the so-called "western world-economy" (a part ofthe planet which is eco-nomically autonomous and self-sufficient), paying special attention to the repercussions of this concept in the linguistic systems. The relationship between globalization and language is thus established within the general frame of the expansion of capitalism. Severa! questions related to the scien-tific language are then developed focusing in its three-fold dimensionas a vehicle of knowledge, as a capital semiotic too! for scientific production and as a scene of political struggle. The role of the English language as the scien-tific language of the West is then analyzed, together with its quick expansion to the detriment of other national languages due to political and economic motives.
