The classification of paremias can differ from one language to another. In French paremias, there are, among others, the proverbe and the dicton (saying); in Spanish, there are, among others, the proverbio and the refrán. In books where the Chinese paremiological units are collected, proverbs are not distinguished from dictons, because the Chinese word yàn-yǔ refers to both what the French call proverbe and dicton. However, there is another kind of unit, namely chéng-yǔ being unique in Chinese. It seems intuitively that some of the chéng-yǔ possess similarities with Chinese proverbs. Considering the prosodic, syntactic and semantic characteristics of the proverbe, this paper attempts to compare the similarities and differences between yàn-yǔ and chéng-yǔ. Assuming, as a working hypothesis, that proverbs are sentences, the analysis will show that certain chéng-yǔ function as sentence. The result of this paper could provide possible criteria based on linguistics to those who seek equivalent proverbs between French and Chinese languages
