Cervantes’s novella El licenciado Vidriera follows the fate of a letrado from the lower echelons of society, demonstrating that the study of law provided an attractive means of social advancement during early modernity, and that such opportunities for social mobility declined in the latter part of the Golden Age. At the same time, the novel describes the relationship between individual and society and the limits of individual self-fashioning in a more open way than the picaresque novel
