En 1784 Benjamin Franklin publicó una colección bilingüe conocida como Bagatelles from Passy en la que incluyó “Remarks concerning the Savages of North America”. Nuevas ediciones de la breve pieza salieron inmediatamente en varios libros, periódicos y enciclopedias contribuyendo a su éxito. Mientras las traducciones francesas hicieron que el texto fuera disponible para un público europeo, no fue hasta 1843 cuando una traducción directa al español pudo alcanzar una distribución más amplia en el mundo hispano. En 1801, sin embargo, la Gaceta de Guatemala había publicado un largo extracto del texto como fruto probable del viaje reciente a Filadelfia del editor Alejandro Ramírez. El hecho de que “Hospitalidad de los indios Mohawks” apareció sin que se mencionara a su prestigioso autor plantea preguntas que este artículo pretende tomar en cuenta concerniente a la dinámica de la recepción de los escritos de Franklin en en el periódico centroamericano y más generalmente en la prensa hispana del momento.
In 1784 Benjamin Franklin published a bilingual collection known as Bagatelles from Passy in which he included “Remarks concerning the Savages of North America”. New editions of the short piece followed immediately in various books, newspapers and encyclopedias, contributing to its considerable success. While French translations made the text available to a European audience, it was not until 1843 that a direct Spanish translation would reach a wider distribution in the Hispanic world. Nonetheless, in 1801, the Gaceta de Guatemala published a large excerpt of this text resulting most probably from the editor Alejandro Ramirez’s recent voyage to Philadelphia. The fact that “Hospitalidad de los Indios Mohawks” appeared without its prestigious author being acknowledged led to several questions that this article means to address concerning the dynamics of the reception of Franklin’s writings in the Spanish speaking press of the time, and more specifically the modalities and implications of its presence in the Central American newspaper.
