Se analiza la novela “Salón de belleza” de Mario Bellatin observando cómo se construyen tanto la historia como sus espacios: por un lado guardando correspondencia entre la realidad y la fantasía -vanidad (el salón de belleza) y por el otro oscilando entre la realidad y la agonía (el Moridero), partiendo del sistema de imágenes en torno al concepto de “carnaval” y de la concepción estética del “grotesco” que Mijail Bajtín desarrolla en su obra “La Cultura Popular en la Edad Media y en el Renacimiento”. La aproximación a esta novela de tema gay propone la hipótesis de que es necesaria la creación de espacios alternativos para trascender una realidad cotidiana a la que no se quiere pertenecer, siempre en la búsqueda del lugar ideal para una total expresión de la libertad. Búsqueda que puede transitar incluso por la muerte.
The novel “Beauty Salon”, by Mario Bellatin is analyzed dissecting history’s components and the “spaces” where it is revealed. On the one hand it is described the correspondence between reality and fantasy - vanity, the world of the beauty salon typifying the latter. On the other, this work shows how the novel oscillates between reality and agony (Moridero), using a string of images featuring the concepts of the carnival and the grotesque which Mikhail Bakhtin develops in his work, “Popular culture of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance”. The hypothesis that this paper takes to the gay issue is that it is necessary to create alternative spaces in order to transcend the conventions of an ordinary life, and to have a place that welcomes the freedom of expression.
