Intentamos en el presente trabajo echar luz sobre la presencia árabe e islámica en América Latina, en general, y en Chile, en particular, a través del personaje de Youseff/José en la novela Peregrino de ojos brillantes, de Jaime Hales. El escritor nos configura la vida cotidiana de dicho personaje y los misterios y sigilos que se ciernen sobre ella y contribuyen a encauzarla hacia cierto destino. Ponemos de relieve la nueva visión que ofrece la obra acerca del tema del inmigrante árabe en Latinoamérica, luego, hablamos de otros personajes que influyeron en Youseff, así como, abordamos su viaje en busca de la tierra objeto de profecía. Después, aquilatamos los rasgos físicos, morales y psicológicos del protagonista, como: su creencia en las profecías, su integración en la sociedad y su nostalgia por la patria, y, por último, apostillamos su identidad religiosa.
In this paper we will shed light on the Arab and Islamic presence in Latin America, in general, and in Chile, in particular, through the character of Youseff/José in the novel Peregrino de ojos brillantes, by Jaime Hales. The writer configures the daily life of this character and the mysteries and secrets that hang over him and help guide him towards a certain destination. We highlight the new vision offered by the novel about the life of Arab immigrant in Latin America, then we talk about other characters that influenced Youseff, as well as his journey in search of the land object of prophecy. Afterward, we expose and analyze the protagonist's physical, moral and psychological traits, such as his belief in the prophecies, his integration into society, his nostalgia for his homeland, and, finally, his religious identity.
