In a sarcastic, nostalgic and tender tone, Rafael Reig narrates the life story of a boy who grows up in an environment of material poverty and loneliness, but with unbreakable friendships that he will always keep. In his adolescence he begins a social ascent that is proportional and parallel to his moral degradation. The novel defines the characteristics of the city inhabited by the wealthy and the working classes, and how they view each other with suspicion and envy respectively. The upper classes, “attractive people”, strive not to lose their privileges, while the lower classes, “unattractive people”, strive to be like the rich. Madrid, far from being presented as a compact whole, will be the city in whose context social and cultural differences are revealed. The city is a ductile space in which homo urbanus moves in and out of neighbourhoods.
