This article explores works of Spanish Golden Age literature to gauge their potential as antecedents of horror literature, paying particular attention to the magic-terror juncture. Reference is made to six texts (mainly short novels) that include macabre and supernatural episodes where sorcery, necromancy, and witchcraft play a fundamental role. The objective of this essay is to identify common, unifying features in order to determine if horror stories did, in fact, exist in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
