Esta necrológica rinde homenaje a la figura de Anthony H. Clarke, un hispanista y peredista, fallecido en 2020. Fue un gran lector, un excelente conocedor de la narrativa europea del XIX y un amante incondicional de España. Su carrera como especialista en la obra de Pereda se inicia en los años 60 del siglo XX con su tesis doctoral. En el artículo se destacan su rigor en el juicio académico, su profundidad en la lectura de los textos y su originalidad en la argumentación y valoración literaria. También trabajó como o codirector de las Obras completas de Pereda y desempeñó un papel importante en la difusión de la obra del escritor cántabro.
This obituary pays tribute to the figure of Anthony H. Clarke, a Hispanic and Peregrine, who died in 2020. He was a great reader, an excellent connoisseur of the 19th century European narrative and an unconditional lover of Spain. His career as a specialist in the work of Pereda began in the 1960s with his doctoral thesis. The article highlights his rigor in academic judgment, his depth in reading the texts and his originality in argumentation and literary assessment. He also worked as co-director of the Obras completas of Pereda and played an important role in spreading the work of the Cantabrian writer.
