El artículo describe cuál fue el proyecto más ambicioso del polígrafo, Menéndez Pelayo, así como las problemáticas a las que se enfrentó para organizarlo. La Historia Crítica de la Literatura Española (HCLE), el proyecto historiográfico, destacaba por dos características: por un lado, una visión diacrónica desde la «prehistoria» clásica hasta la época contemporánea; y por otro, la voluntad de incluir en este espacio literario la realidad multilingüe de la península y de las nuevas naciones castellano parlantes de ultramar. Las problemáticas principales que surgieron fueron el territorial y el lingüístico. Menéndez Pelayo se inspiró en el historiador, Amador de los Ríos, y tuvo el constante apoyo de mentores y amigos como Laverde Ruiz, Juan Valera y el colombiano Miguel A. Caro. No obstante, su prematura muerte le impidió materializar su ambicioso proyecto.
The article describes what was the most ambitious project of the polygraph, Menéndez Pelayo, as well as the problems he faced to organize it. The Critical History of Spanish Literature (HCLE), the historiographical project, stood out for two characteristics: on the one hand, a diachronic vision from the classical «prehistory» to the contemporary era; and on the other, the desire to include in this literary space the multilingual reality of the peninsula and the new Spanish-speaking overseas nations. The main problems that arose were territorial and linguistic. Menéndez Pelayo was inspired by the historian, Amador de los Ríos, and had the constant support of mentors and friends such as Laverde Ruiz, Juan Valera and the Colombian Miguel A. Caro. However, his untimely death prevented him from realizing his ambitious project.
