El presente texto reproduce el discurso de Leopoldo Rodríguez Alcalde dado en el Ateneo santanderino en el año 1949. Versa sobre la poesía de Rafael Alberti y su relación con el mar, del significado de sus elementos poéticos y de las conexiones metafóricas con otros escritores como García Lorca, Rubén Darío y Antonio Machado. Es un discurso relevante porque se dio en la época de la posguerra y no sufrió ninguna censura, pues además fue acogido por la institución oficial del Ateneo. Rodríguez Alcalde ensalza la figura de Alberti, narrando datos de su biografía que marcaron su obra, y establece similitudes con otros poetas coetáneos.
