Este texto reseña una monografía que versa sobre la sátira en el periodismo decimonónico, centrándose en la figura de Modesto Lafuente, que fue también un importante historiador que publicó en varios volúmenes Historia General de España. El estudio analiza su semanario Fray Gerundio en los seis capítulos de la monografía. Primero presenta un contexto histórico y social de la política y el periodismo españoles para después pasar a explicar las circunstancias en las que nace este periódico. Luego se analizan todos los números publicados, además del estilo de Lafuente al escribir, la sátira utilizada en sus textos y, por último, las ilustraciones que a veces los acompañaban. La bibliografía final es amplia y útil para profundizar más en este autor tan poco reconocido. En suma, es una monografía bien hecha y documentada que da cuenta de la importante labor de Lafuente.
This text reviews a monograph that deals with satire in nineteenth-century journalism, focusing on the figure of Modesto Lafuente, who was also an important historian who published several volumes of the Historia General de España. The study analyzes the weekly of Fray Gerundio in the six chapters of the monograph. It first presents a historical and social context of Spanish politics and journalism and then goes on to explain the circumstances in which this newspaper was born. Then all the published numbers are analyzed, as well as Lafuente's style of writing, the satire used in his texts and, finally, the illustrations that sometimes accompanied them. The final bibliography is extensive and useful to delve deeper into this little-known author. In short, it is a well-done and documented monograph that accounts for the important work of Lafuente.
