En cada capítulo va desgranando cuestiones importantes: la elección de París, el tipo de emigrantes, qué disciplinas artísticas realizaba cada uno allí, cómo se sentían… Es un libro que tiene en cuenta todos los factores de la migración, sin salirse del marco del contexto histórico y social del siglo XIX.
