The article, dedicated to the figure of Gabriela Zapolska (1857-1921), a Polish playwright nowadays practically unknown outside of Poland, presents her as a feminist and an unorthodox naturalist author. Zapolska was an actress (she worked inter alia in Antoine's Théâtre Libre) and a teacher of future actors at a drama school, which she opened in Kraków, the author of plays and narratives, as well as newspaper articles that dealt with a wide variety of topics. This article, however, focuses mainly on the genuine women’s emancipation project of Zapolska. Seen as a model of a free woman, a feminist and at the same time accused by other feminists of her time of being an «enemy of women», Zapolska proposed a deliberately unfinished project open to modifications: a project closely related to the reality of the moment, that responded to its needs and that was attainable. Its defining element is beauty. Creating and feeling beauty, as well as teaching others −fam-ily and domestic workers− how to experience beauty, is, according to Zapolska, the main responsibility of women. Yet another of the main «identity figures» (A. Janicka) of a woman, the chief mission of her life, is motherhood.
