Líneas de investigación crecientes han establecido que la traducción del lenguaje racial puede representar un desafío sustancial para los traductores. Por lo tanto, al examinar las estrategias empleadas en el proceso de traducción, los investigadores pueden analizar cómo las ideas sobre la diferencia racial y cultural pueden ser deconstruidas y transferidas de un contexto a otro mediante el lenguaje. Los estudios existentes han explorado la traducción de etiquetas raciales en el doblaje de películas y la representación de variedades lingüísticas racializadas en la traducción literaria. Hasta la fecha, estos estudios han representado líneas de investigación paralelas pero separadas y ningún estudio existente examina estos fenómenos de traducción en el mismo contexto. Sin embargo, ambas líneas de investigación proporcionan información útil para identificar las estrategias empleadas en la traducción del lenguaje racial y para analizar el efecto de estas elecciones en el texto traducido. El presente estudio explora la traducción del lenguaje racial, tanto el léxico racial como las variedades lingüísticas racializadas, en el contexto de dos doblajes en español de la película BlacKkKlansman. La comparación de dos doblajes permite observar las formas concretas en que las intervenciones intencionadas pueden realmente realizar el trabajo de máxima equivalencia.
Burgeoning lines of scholarship have established that the translation of racial language can represent a substantial challenge for translators. Thus, by examining the strategies that translators employ to render racial language from one context to another, researchers are able to examine how ideas about racial and cultural difference can be deconstructed and transferred from one context to another via the medium of language. Existing studies have explored the rendering of racial labels in film dubbing and the representation of racialized language varieties in literary translation. To this point, however, these two types of studies have represented parallel but separate lines of inquiry, and no existing study examines both translation phenomena in the same context. Nevertheless, both lines of inquiry provide helpful insight for identifying the strategies that translators employ to translate racial language and for analyzing the effect of these choices on the translated text. The present study explores the translation of racial language, both racial labels and racialized language varieties, in the context of two Spanish dubbings of BlacKkKlansman. The comparison of the two dubbings allows for the observation of the concrete ways that specific interventions can actually do the work of maximum equivalence.
