El esp. zote se cataloga en el DCECH como “voz de creación expresiva”, etiqueta criticada por David Pharies (1984). Nos proponemos retomar el asunto, ampliando la perspectiva con un análisis detallado de las voces que se pueden identificar como cognados de la palabra que nos ocupa. En primer lugar, emprendemos un examen semántico de los vocablos para mostrar que las aparentes divergencias de significado responden fielmente a una red conceptual recurrente, cuyo núcleo expresa un ‘ímpetu’, verbalizado por una onomatopeya. Tras identificar los lazos conceptuales entre las palabras originadas en esta onomatopeya, se explica la variación fonética y, por el intermedio del método gramática comparada – reconstrucción, se establece el étimo protorrománico de la familia. Esta investigación confirma, de hecho, la validez de la etiqueta de “creación expresiva” que proponían Corominas y Pascual para zote y sus cognados.
Sp. zoteis labelled in the DCECH as “word of expressive creation” (“voz de creación expresiva”), a tag that was criticized by David Pharies (1984). In this paper we go back to the issue, broadening the perspective with a detailed analysis of the lexemes that can be identified as cognates of the word that concerns us. In the first place, we undertake a semantic examination of the words in order to show that the apparent divergence of meaning actually respond to a recurring conceptual network, whose nucleus expresses an ‘impulse’, verbalized by an onomatopoeia. After identifying the conceptual links between the words originating from this onomatopoeia, we explain the phonetic variation and, by using the comparative grammar –reconstruction method, we establish the Proto-Romance etymon of the family. This research confirms, in fact, the validity of the label of “expressive creation” that Corominas and Pascual had statedfor Sp. zoteand its cognates.
