This article discusses some of the main theories and concerns about the role of gesture that some late antique and medieval theorists dealt with. It also discusses the capacity of gestures for social distinction and the impositions that the fabric of the estamental society imposed on the behaviour of the individual. The aim is to offer a functional analysis of the gestures in the Libro de Apolonio from a formal point of view, paying attention to how their gestural behaviour, their arrangement in space and even their clothing are of capital importance in the characterisation of the characters, in the development of the plot and in the transmission of a certain system of values that are considered desirable by the author.
