The issue about the serious or parodic meaning of the Tragicomedia de Amadís de Gaula (1533) still remains unresolved. In order to settle it, we must high-light the different treatment that Gil Vicente gives to the chivalric matter during the reigns of D. Manuel I and D. João III. From the Don Duardos onwards, Gil Vicente will identify chivalry with the “case of love”. In Tragicomedia de Amadís de Gaula, he not only alternates dramatic tension and pathos with comic and burlesque relaxation, but also gives prominence to words over action. He also incorporates features of the sentimental romance that, once identified, will help us better understand the meaning of the tragicomedy.
