En El ladrón del rayo, novela fantástica escrita por Rick Riordan, se relata la catábasis o descenso al inframundo del héroe Percy Jackson y sus compañeros (capítulos dieciocho y diecinueve). El episodio integra diversos personajes, localizaciones y motivos característicos del tema grecolatino del viaje al mundo de los muertos. En este artículo se analizan los procedimientos empleados por el autor para actualizar y adaptar los elementos literarios del tema en un narración destinada a un público adolescente. Para ello se realiza un estudio comparativo entre el episodio del viaje al mundo de los muertos en El ladrón del Rayo y diversos desarrollos grecolatinos del tema, con especial atención al descenso de Eneas (Aen. VI).
In The Lightning Thief, a fantastic novel written by Rick Riordan, the catabasis (or descent to the netherworld) of the hero Percy Jackson and his companions is recounted (chapters 18 and 19). Some characters, locations, and characteristic motifs of the Greco-Latin theme of the journey to the underworld are incorporated into the episode. In this article the procedures used by the author to update and adapt the theme’s literary elements in a narrative intended for an adolescent audience are analyzed. For this purpose, a comparative study is carried out between the journey to the underworld episode in The Lightning Thief and some Greco-Latin developments of the theme, with special attention to the descent of Aeneas (Aen. VI).
