Immersed in the traumatic experience of exile, Carles Riba resorted to numerous literary influences to compose the Elegies de Bierville. Within the hitherto scarcely explored ideological framework of Christianity, this article proposes a reading of the Elegies in the light of St. Augustine’s postulates of time. Starting from an analysis of some hundred time references in the dozen elegies and Riba’s own notes for readers, we will firstly show the two levels of time that the lyrical ego moves between when facing its ontological position in the present time in exile, which is opposed to the luminous past. Secondly, there is the idea of the simultaneity of the moments lived through, which are reordered in the mind. The article includes an annex containing all the time references in the Elegies.
Submergit en l’experiència traumàtica de l’exili, Carles Riba va recórrer a nombroses influències literàries per a la redacció de les Elegies de Bierville. En el marc ideològic del cristianisme, poc explorat fins al moment, aquest article proposa una lectura de les Elegies a la llum dels postulats de sant Agustí sobre el temps. A partir d’una anàlisi del centenar de referències temporals contingudes en les dotze elegies, i de les notes de lectura del mateix Riba, s’assenyalarà, en primer lloc, la construcció de dos nivells temporals entre els quals es mou el jo líric, abocat a una postura ontològica en el temps present de l’exili, que s’oposa al passat lluminós. En segon lloc, la idea de la simultaneïtat de cadascun dels instants viscuts, reordenats en la memòria. L’article inclou un annex que recull totes les referències temporals de les Elegies.
