En la historia de la lengua española el Auto de los Reyes Magos se nos presenta como uno de los primeros textos literarios conocidos. Tal precocidad, sin embargo, viene acompañada por demasiados interrogantes. En el presente artículo tenemos como objetivo responder a algunos de ellos. Partiendo de los trabajos que Rafael Lapesa le dedicó, realizaremos nuestro análisis desde tres frentes: paleográfico:
estudiaremos las particularidades gráficas de un texto romance tan primitivo en su contexto peninsular;
lingüístico: profundizaremos en los componentes latino, castellano y franco que conforman la obra a través del examen de la aspiración de F-, el estado de las sibilantes, la variación del artículo indefinido, el término escarno, las formas de tratamiento, la rima y la estructura poética; literario: teniendo en cuenta la situación político-social de Toledo en el siglo XII, daremos respuesta al problema de la singularidad del Auto como primer y único representante del teatro medieval castellano. Terminaremos con la edición del texto, en la que propondremos alternativas a la interpretación tradicional.
The Auto de los Reyes Magos is considered to be the first literary text known in the History of the Spanish language with many questions that have not yet been answered. The aim of this paper is to provide some answers to questions raised by Rafael Lapesa’s work. In this paper we address three main points: paleography, linguistics and literary context. Firstly, special attention is given to the graphical distinctiveness which is typical in such an old text. Secondly, linguistic issues such as the aspiration of F-, the state of the sibilants, the variations of the indefinite article, the escarno term, forms of address, the rhyme and its poetic structure are taken into account. Finally, the literary context of the work around the 12th century will explain the singularity of the Auto as the first representative of Castilian medieval theater. As a conclusion we will supply an edition of the text suggesting some alternatives to traditional explanations.
