Joaquín Dicenta publica Crónicas (1898) en un momento en el que su prestigio literario se había afianzado y la nación española atravesaba una situación crítica. La obra, hoy olvidada, reúne un conjunto de veintitrés crónicas que previamente vieron la luz en la prensa finisecular y que, a grandes rasgos, abordan dos temas recurrentes en su producción creativa: el arte y la cuestión social. Este artículo tiene por objeto ocuparse de la transmisión textual de la colección y de la datación de la primera publicación de los textos compilados, así como indagar las posturas artísticas y literarias de su autor. Entre los distintos conceptos que se revisan, se encuentran las nociones de «realismo», «romanticismo», «arte desinteresado», «arte humanitario» y «literatura social».
Joaquín Dicenta edited Crónicas (1898) at a time when his literary prestige had been strenghthened and the Spanish nation was going through a critical situation. The book, now forgotten, brings together a set of twenty-three chronicles that were published in the turn-of-the-century press. Crónicas addresses two recurring themes in Dicenta’s creative production: art and social issues. This article discusses the textual transmission of the collection and the dating of the first publication of the compiled texts, as well as the study of the artistic and literary positions of its author. Among the different concepts reviewed are the notions of «realism», «romanticism», «desinterested art», «humanitarian art» and «social literature».
