Llena de complejos símbolos, reinterpretados a partir de su clave medieval, Cantemir reestructura y redefine el bestiario medieval, adaptándolo a las necesidades de su escritura. This article focuses on the symbolic analysis of one of the most enig-matic works of the Moldovian prince Dimitrie Cantemir, The Hieroglyphic History, on the occasion of the third centenary of his death. Full of complex symbols, reinter-preted in their medieval key, Cantemir restructures and redefines the medieval bes-tiary, adapting it to the needs of his writing. His allegorical characters facing each other in the struggle for power reveal some of the main problems of corruption to achieve the thrones of Moldavia and Wallachia, with allusions to the political figures of those times, as well as to the Ottoman Empire
