Durante la Guerra Civil Española de 1936 se mantuvo en Madrid, a pesar del cerco enemigo y de los bombardeos, una gran actividad teatral que incluyó representaciones de zarzuela de manera continuada en tres teatros, alterna en uno más y ocasional en otros. Se representaron 133 zarzuelas diferentes, con algunos estrenos incluidos, sumándose cerca de cuatro mil funciones, gestionadas casi todas por los sindicatos del espectáculo de CNT y UGT. La guerra supuso el fin de la Edad de Plata de la zarzuela y dejó fijado para el futuro un repertorio muy determinado por el de los años inmediatamente anteriores a su estallido.
During the Spanish Civil War of 1936, despite the enemy siege and bombings, a great theatrical activity was maintained in Madrid that included continuous zarzuela performances in three theaters, frequent in another and occasionally in a few more. 133 different zarzuelas were performed, with some premieres included, totaling nearly four thousand performances, almost all managed by the CNT and UGT entertainment unions. The war marked the end of the Silver Age of zarzuela and left a repertoire determined for the future by what was carried out in the years immediately prior to its outbreak.
