En 1936, durante poco tiempo, Arlt estuvo encargado de escribir reseñas cinematográficas para el diario El Mundo. Pero si se compara sus críticas con otros estudios de la época el lector quedará defraudado, puesto que Arlt se queda del todo en la fábula y no menciona en ningún momento el sujet. Obviamente no hay que buscar la relación de Arlt con el cine en sus conocimientos específicos del nuevo arte, sino en el efecto de éste sobre sus personajes ficticios. Por un lado encontramos a los jóvenes delincuentes que imitan las películas norteamericanas y por otro, los personajes de la clase media, sin intereses intelectuales ni sociales, que se inspiran en los mitos hollywoodenses para sobrellevar la esterilidad de su vida o que incluso aspiran a convertirse en actores de cine ellos mismos. Tampoco hay que olvidar que Arlt fue uno de los primeros escritores argentinos que comprendió el influjo del cine sobre las masas, influencia que el Astrólogo piensa explotar en su proyecto «revolucionario».
In 1936 Arlt wrote some film notes for the newspaper El Mundo. But in comparison with contemporary critics, Arlt's notes are of little interest as he only mentions the fabula and says nothing about the sujet. Nevertheless the critic will discover an important aspect in his novels concerning the influence of cinema on his characters. On the one hand, we find the typical juvenile delinquent who imitates American gangsters as seen in US movies; on the other hand, there are the sterile middle class characters, without any intellectual or social interest whatsoever who try to overcome their boredom dreaming about Hollywood myths or even try to become actors themselves. Last but not least, one should not forget that Arlt was probably the first Argentine writer to understand the effect of the film industry on the masses, making the Astrologer exploit this media in his «revolutionary» project.
