El destino de las lenguas vernáculas en España ha seguido a lo largo de este siglo los avatares de los cambios políticos, atravesando periodos, generalmente cortos, en los que la legislación se hace más permisiva y otros, mucho más largos, marcados por el sello de la intolerancia. La nueva Constitución de 1978 representa el inicio de una nueva andadura y un intento por encontrar la solución a uno de los problemas básicos de España: el de la estructura nacional y evidentemente, ligado a él, el de las lenguas.
Throughout the century, the destiny of Spain's vernacular languages has followed the avatars of political upheavals, with usually short periods of more permissive legislation, and much longer periods marked by the seal of intolerance. The new constitution of 1978 represents the beginning of a new phase and an attempt to find the solution to one of the basic problems of Spain: the national structure and the closely related issue of languages.
