El propósito de este artículo consiste en demostrar que en la novela La vida breve, de Juan Carlos Onetti, la ciudad de Santa María está creada y mitificada con base en un decorado mítico en relación con el símbolo, el mito y el arquetipo. Esta situación se inscribe en la tradición milenaria y arcaica relativa a la creación de una ciudad por medio de un rito, como si se tratara de la puesta en escena de un misterio en un espacio y un tiempo sagrados. En cuanto al espacio, el diseño se basa en la figura geométrica del cuadrado. Además, consta de la noción de centro como axis mundi. En relación con el tiempo, la fundación de la ciudad debe llevarse a cabo en una fecha especial. Por otro lado, en la novela de Onetti subyace el mito de la pasión de Cristo, en el que es esencial la presencia de la Virgen María. La ciudad creada por Onetti es una ciudad de pecadores. La Virgen es invocada como madre protectora. En este elemento del decorado mítico de la ciudad se funden las imágenes de la madre de Cristo y la de Santa Rosa María de Lima.
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that in the novel La vida breve, by Juan Carlos Onetti, the city of Santa María is created and mythologized based on a mythical setting in relation to the symbol, the myth, and the archetype. This situation is part of the ancient and archaic tradition related to the creation an mythification of a city by means of a rite, as if it were the setting of a mystery in a sacred space and time in a scene. As for the space, the design is based on the geometric figure or the square; in addition, it consists of the notion of center as axis mundi. In relation to time, the founding of the city must take place on a special date. Furthermore, in the novel is the myth of the passion of Christ, where the presence of the Virgin Mary is essential. The city created by Onetti is a city of sinners. The Virgin is invoked as a protective mother. In this element of the mythical decoration of the city, the images of the mother of Christ and that of Santa Rosa María de Lima merge.
