The present study focuses on the Roman foundation of Valentia during the Republic, following the last of the Lusitanian Wars. Its urban layout is analyzed; and special attention is given to the forum, as the heart of the Roman city. Springing from the social and political conflicts between the oligarchs of Rome, this article examines the destruction of the colony in the 1st century BC, and its refoundation decades later. Finally, the impact of Christianity on the city is considered, spurred by the martyrdom of deacon Vincent under the rule of Diocletian.
El presente estudio versa sobre la fundación romana de Valentia en período republicano como consecuencia de la última de las Guerras Lusitanas. Se analiza la planta urbana de la colonia, con especial detenimiento en el foro, como centro neurálgico de la ciudad romana.
Contextualizamos su destrucción en el s. I a.C., a partir de los conflictos de origen social y de poder que se desataron entre las oligarquías de Roma, y su posterior reconstrucción o refundación décadas después. Finalmente, tratamos el impacto del Cristianismo en la ciudad, polarizado por el martirio del diácono Vicente bajo el gobierno de Diocleciano.
