This article examines the sustained dissemination of John Stuart Mill’s Considerations On Representative Government (1861) through Spanish-language translations on both sides of the Atlantic, from the initial Chilean translation, published in 1865, to the present day. Adopting methodological assumptions from the field of Post-Translation Studies, contributions from Translator Studies on translators’ biographies, Lepinette’s model of the history of translation integrating the sociocultural and the descriptive-contrastive approaches, and Toury’s norm-based approach within Descriptive Translation Studies, this case study examines the description of translators’ lives and works, paratexts, French mediating translations, editors, and publishers in order to precisely determine both the initial and the preliminary norms these versions originally adhered to. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the operational norms —particularly those concerning the annotations made by translators and the author— provides insights not only into the translation theory underlying the translated texts but also into the intertextual relationships between the source text(s) and the translated versions.
Este artículo examina la difusión ininterrumpida de Considerations on Representative Government (1861) de John Stuart Mill a través de las traducciones al español a ambos lados del Atlántico entre la traducción inicial chilena, publicada en 1865, y la actualidad. Adoptando los presupuestos metodológicos en el ámbito de los «estudios de postraducción», las aportaciones de los «estudios de traductores» sobre las biografías de los traductores, el modelo de Lépinette sobre la historia de la traducción que integra los enfoques sociocultural y descriptivo—contrastivo, y el enfoque normativo de Toury dentro de los «estudios de traducción descriptivos», el presente estudio de caso aborda la descripción de la vida y obra de los traductores, los paratextos, las versiones francesas intermedias, los editores y las editoriales con el fin de determinar con precisión tanto las normas iniciales como las preliminares a las que estas versiones se adhirieron originalmente. Además, el análisis pormenorizado de las normas operacionales —en particular las relativas a las anotaciones realizadas por los traductores y el autor— permite comprender no sólo la teoría de la traducción subyacente a los textos traducidos, sino también las relaciones intertextuales entre el texto o textos de partida y las versiones traducidas.
